This morning I checked my box garden for weeds, water needs, pruning and total T.L.C. Because my yard's soil is full of clay and is not very hospitable, I typically plant seeds or small plants in packaging with store-bought, salutary soil, rather than in the ground. To my surprise, as I knelt down to prune some dead branches off my tomato plant, I noticed what I concept was a weed, out of the corner of my eye, that was growing in the ground outside of the container. Upon closer inspection, the "weed" turned out to be a salutary new Impatiens plant. Now bear in mind that my Impatiens are planted in an additional one box about 12 feet away from this location so I was quite amazed to find this petite stray Impatiens plant that must have made its way from one side of my patio to the other, burrowed itself into the ground and then sprouted.

This single Impatiens plant had managed to bloom in the inhospitable soil of my front yard. I do not know how long it took for this petite seed to work its way over my patio, burrow into the soil and bloom, but I was delighted to find this unexpected flowering plant growing in the hard soil without any help from me.

It struck me how this was such a gorgeous metaphor for realizing success in life and business. You see, aspiring entrepreneurs (and even established entrepreneurs) often think they have to find the excellent enterprise idea, the excellent time, the excellent place and have all their ducks in a row before they will be able to caress enterprise success. This petite stray Impatiens plant shows us that success can spring from imperfect conditions. We can caress success right here and right now in less-than-desirable conditions.

Sitting surface in the warm afternoon sun with my eyes ended and listening to the bees buzzing in the lavender bush behind me, I had been trying to make sense of my loss of friendship. Was I to blame? Did I do or say something to offend my friend? While deep in thought, I had a vision. A picture of an hourglass appeared in my mind's eye, followed by a sunflower. The hourglass moderately emptied its sandy contents from the top half into the bottom, while the sunflower diligently tracked the sun's course across the day-lit sky in a 180 degree arc, from horizon to horizon.

Mother Nature never seems to fail me. In an instant, I grasped the meaning of this vision. There comes a time when a sunflower stops tracking the sun and becomes freezing in an eastward-facing position. The energy the sunflower required from the sun is no longer needed: the sunflower had come into full bloom. Man once told me that when couples stop loving each other, it often happens because they have outgrown the need for the other. I think nature in all her wisdom was giving me a similar message about friendships.

My friend and I have simply outgrown our need for each other. While we were still friends, we spent many hours in each other's company, drawing energy from one another. She was able to meet some of my needs that other habitancy could not meet and likewise, I was able to meet some of hers. Since then, our priorities and focus have changed. We have stopped drawing energy from each other. We have come into full bloom!
